Ten puzzles in the four kinds of reasoning our IQ test uses. The matrices, letter series and rotation puzzles come from the test's own generator, so they work exactly like the real thing. None will appear in your test, because every test is built fresh.
How to use these puzzles
Try each puzzle before you look. Pick an option to check it, then open the explanation. Time is not counted here; in the test you have about 47 seconds a puzzle.
Pattern matrices
Look along the rows and down the columns.
Puzzle 1Pattern matrices
Which tile completes the grid?
?
Show the answer
C. Each row keeps one shape, and the number of shapes grows by one from left to right.
Puzzle 2Pattern matrices
Which tile completes the grid?
?
Show the answer
F. Two rules run at once: every row and column holds each shape once, and every row and column holds each fill once.
Number series
Find the rule, then apply it once more.
Puzzle 3Number series
What comes next? 3, 7, 11, 15, …
Show the answer
D. Each step adds 4, so 15 + 4 = 19.
Puzzle 4Number series
What comes next? 2, 6, 18, 54, …
Show the answer
A. Each number is three times the one before: 54 × 3 = 162.
Puzzle 5Number series
What comes next? 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, …
Show the answer
C. These are square numbers: 1², 2², 3², 4², 5², so next is 6² = 36.
Puzzle 6Number series
What comes next? 5, 20, 8, 17, 11, …
Show the answer
B. Two series take turns. The first adds 3 (5, 8, 11), the second subtracts 3 (20, 17, 14).
Letter series
Think of letters as positions: A = 1, B = 2.
Puzzle 7Letter series
What comes next? E, H, K, N, Q, …
Show the answer
A. Move 3 letters forward each time.
Puzzle 8Letter series
What comes next? V, T, R, P, N, …
Show the answer
E. Move 2 letters back each time.
Mental rotation
Mirror images do not count.
Puzzle 9Mental rotation
Which shape is the same as this one, only turned? Mirror images do not count.
Show the answer
D. The correct shape is the original turned 180° clockwise. The others are mirror images or different shapes.
Puzzle 10Mental rotation
Which shape is the same as this one, only turned? Mirror images do not count.
Show the answer
B. The correct shape is the original turned 90° clockwise. The others are mirror images or have one square moved.
What these puzzles measure
Pattern matrices: fluid reasoning, seeing structure in unfamiliar shapes.
Number series: quantitative reasoning, testing and changing a rule.
Letter series: rule tracking and working memory.
Mental rotation: visual-spatial reasoning, telling a turn from a mirror image.
How practice fits in
Familiar formats lift a score by a few points, so a result taken straight after practice is slightly generous. For the most honest estimate, count your first calm attempt.
