Psychologist · Intelligence, personality and cognitive psychology

Gareth Roberts is a Welsh psychologist based in Cardiff who specialises in human intelligence, personality, cognitive functioning and the psychological mechanisms behind individual differences in thought and behaviour. He writes the guides on this site and the explanations behind the IQ test.

Areas of focus

Human intelligence and IQ

Gareth's main interest is how cognitive abilities are understood, assessed and measured: general intelligence, or the g factor, alongside specific abilities such as verbal reasoning, working memory, processing speed, and fluid and crystallised intelligence. He is particularly interested in how standardised IQ assessments are built, interpreted and limited, and he stresses that no single number captures a person's creativity, practical judgement or potential.

Personality psychology

His second focus is stable individual differences in thought, emotion, motivation and behaviour, including the Five-Factor Model: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. He is interested in how personality and intelligence interact, and how people develop distinctive psychological profiles across their lives.

Cognitive psychology

Memory, attention, perception, reasoning, problem-solving, executive functioning and decision-making: how the mind processes information, how cognitive biases shape judgement, and why people can read the same situation in very different ways.

Psychometrics and assessment

The scientific measurement of intelligence, personality and cognitive performance, with an emphasis on reliability, validity, standardisation and responsible interpretation. In his view, an assessment is a tool for insight, not a measure of a person's worth or a limit on their future.

Behavioural differences and human potential

How genetics, education, upbringing, social circumstances and experience shape psychological characteristics, and how relatively stable traits sit alongside the capacity to learn and change.

How Gareth approaches psychology

He is also interested in current debates on how intelligence should be measured, the predictive value of personality traits, the ethics of psychological assessment in education and work, and how human reasoning differs from artificial intelligence.

In his words

"The human mind is extraordinarily complex. Intelligence, personality and behaviour are interconnected, yet no single measure can fully explain who a person is. Psychology gives us the tools to investigate these differences scientifically, while reminding us that understanding people requires considerably more than assigning them a score or a label."
